Gasification of sludge

AN CLEAN AND ECOLOGICAL ALTERNATIVE

The thermal drying plants for sludge, connected to many waste water treatment plants generate a significant amount of dry sludge which must can be used with an alternative solution to dumping it in landfill sides. The thermal drying process is usually executed in a typical dryer, whose heat-bearing fluid or thermal oil is heated with natural gas. The price of this process increases each year and it is expected that it will continue to rise in the near future.

On the other hand, the dry sludge is deposited in controlled landfills, whose operating costs are also progressively increasing; due to the application of the Directive 1999/31/CE in relation to landfills for organic wastes, it foresees a drastic increase in costs. On the other hand, based on what is taking place in other EU countries, it is highly probable that they will be banned from landfills.

The current management system is not environmentally sustainable due to the use of fossil fuels and its deposit in landfills, which fail to take advantage of this potential fuel and raw material.

THE CONCEPT

■ Thermal drying (optional) in greenhouses
■ Accumulation and homogenization of the dry sludge
■ Energy recycling by gasification
■ Purification of gaseous effluents

ACCUMULATION OF DRY SLUDGE

The technology is based on the sludge gasification in a fluid bed. Based on the synthetic gas production, the technology achieves the maximum ecological and economic benefits. We have a major industrial plant in Austria which has been operated with sludge from waste water treatment plants for years.

Our technology fulfils the strictest emission limits to the atmosphere and one of its major advantages is based on the gas cleaning process, where it specifically eliminates all types of organic material, acidic gases, metals, and particles.
